,

This past month has been emotional as we struggle through yet the word of another tragedy in a high school. I was in shock when I realized that it has been nearly 20 years since Columbine; the incident that changed our lives forever as educators, parents, and students. Safety has always been a top priority for school communities, yet the school shooting in Broward County, Florida, reminds us that we all must remain vigilant in our safety efforts.

In our district, we regularly review safety procedures to tighten up our processes. We appreciate all of you who have and continue to reach out and share ways that we together can make our schools a safer place. We will continue to talk as a staff about ways that we connect with learners. We know that, even in the most secure settings, the relationships we build as a school community are key in keeping everyone safe.

TPS has policies in place that support the ongoing safety and wellbeing of our learners. This may be a good time for you to review our policies on reporting unsafe behavior such as bullying. If your child or someone you know is being bullied, please use our website notification system by going to the tab “report bullying” on our district home page or on any one of the building home pages. You can find our board policy related to bullying here (just search for "anti-bullying" to find the policy). This anonymous form is sent to a contact person in each building and  each and every report is investigated within 24 hours. If you would like additional information, please contact the building administrators.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to create a safe learning environment.

Respectfully,

Kelly M. Coffin, Ed. D.
Superintendent, Tecumseh Public Schools
