, Welcome to the 2015-16 school year!

As Superintendent of Tecumseh Public Schools, I would like to welcome you to 2015-2016 school year.  It is my distinct privilege to serve the students and families of this great community. This year is going to be a great year!

We have many wonderful initiatives that will be taking place at TPS this year. Our Strategic Planning Process is in its third year and we are definitely seeing the benefits of our hard work. We met with the committee in August to review our progress and discuss new initiatives for the upcoming school year. Our main focus this year will center on the utilization of our current facilities. With the input from the community, we will embark on a journey that will restructure our schools to improve programming and services we offer to students and families. Please check our website for updates on the process or call our office at 517.424.7318 for more information.

We continue to focus on the core of our work--teaching and learning. Our teachers have spent many hours this summer in professional development training to ensure that your children receive the highest quality instruction. Our Instructional Coaches at the elementary, middle and high school level are prepared to work with teachers in the classroom to support student engagement. Our technology department has added additional technology resources in our buildings in order for students to have access to information at their fingertips. Finally, our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) will be in full swing; defining a process that is able to meet the needs of all learners.

We will be partnering with many wonderful organizations to expand community involvement in the education of our students. Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area and Tecumseh High School will be starting an empowerment group for young ladies called Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX). This 20-week program allows freshman ladies the opportunity to learn about various topics necessary for the development of self-esteem. We hope to expand the program to our 8th grade students sometime this year as well. Community Arts of Tecumseh will be offering an art course entitled Young Rembrandts to elementary aged students. This after school program will support the holistic development of children through art. We will also be partnering with the Southern Michigan Center for Science and Industry to bring Mechatronics/Pre-Engineering courses to Tecumseh High School. This satellite program will allow students to explore modern manufacturing techniques in a project-based learning environment.

I want to thank you all for your continued support. Together, we continue to make a difference for our students, our families and our community. If you have any questions or would just like  to talk with me, please contact me by phone at 517-424-7318 or email at kcoffin@tps.k12.mi.us. I would love to hear from you.

Respectfully,

Kelly Coffin
Superintendent

Tecumseh Public Schools Are First to Bring ROX to Michigan

One journey started in Columbus, Ohio almost ten years ago when a full-time faculty member at Ohio State University began a research study about the obstacles facing adolescent girls. Another started at Tecumseh High School nearly five years ago when administrators set out to bring a proven program to their students to help cope with the issues they were facing. Now in the 2015-16 school year Tecumseh Public Schools will become the first school in the state of Michigan to implement the ROX curriculum.

In 2006, Lisa Hinkelman, Ph.D. was a full-time faculty member in Counselor Education and wanted to create a program that helped girls successfully navigate the challenges that they face during their adolescent years. She wanted to form a program that was effective in equipping girls with the skills that they need to address and overcome challenges such as drops in self-esteem, dealing with girl bullying and relational aggression, unhealthy dating relationships and sexual violence, lack of strong friendships and support systems, and limited academic and career expectations.
