We are now settled into another fantastic school year at Tecumseh Public Schools! Our educators continue to work collaboratively to ensure our learners are receiving the support and enrichment opportunities they need. Our parents are working with educators to provide feedback on the learning process as well as serving on teams that are instrumental in moving our district forward.

I am so very proud of our educational staff! They have been working together on job-embedded professional learning; improving their effective instructional practices that we know lead to higher student achievement. Our educators are opening the doors to what has been a pretty isolated profession. They are collaborating in ways that improve student learning. They are visiting the classrooms of their colleagues--gathering ideas and lessons that they then incorporate in their lesson planning efforts. They are all working with Instructional Coaches to improve their skills and receive feedback on the impact of their lessons on student learning.

I am equally proud of our learners! They now understand the connection between instruction and learner outcomes. You can walk into any classroom in our district and ask our learners “What are you learning today?” And, they can give you a solid answer--even our littlest learners! As I meet with members of the graduating class of 2017, I hear time and again how much they appreciate understanding the learning targets and how much more they are getting from each lesson. They appreciate the support that is available, including reading specialists, academic support coaches, interventionists, graduation coaches, virtual learning opportunities--the list goes on and on. We believe in supporting our learners where they are is key to their success in life. We commit resources in our district to ensure that we meet the needs of each and every learner. Our efforts related to the reorganization and our Strategic Design will continue to move our district farther down this path.

Thank you all for your continued support for our district! We are truly a learning community, invested in our children in preparing them for life.

Reorganization Update

Our reorganization efforts are on track for the 2017-18 school year. The community has provided invaluable feedback on our reorganization efforts. Below is the district reorganization plan that will be implemented for the 2017-18 school year:

          • Current Elementary Buildings--Sutton Elementary and Tecumseh Acres Elementary will be Young 5, Kindergarten and 1st grade buildings. Our Tecumseh Preschool Program will be housed at Sutton Elementary
          • Current Middle School Building will serve as a 2nd through 6th grade building
          • Current Herrick Park and Patterson buildings will serve as one 7th grade building and one 8th grade building. Moving forward, the students will spend two years in the same building (looping) with the same educators
          • Current High School will remain a 9th - 12th grade building, including Tecumseh Virtual Academy

This is an exciting time for our district! The reorganization plan, consistent with our newly adopted Strategic Design, will allow all children to identify an individual path for learning. Our educators are currently working to ensure that each child is able to explore their gifts and talents; however, they are held back by the current structure. Our educators are looking forward to the reorganization process, knowing that the new structure will provide increased educational opportunities for our learners.

In order to plan and prepare for this transition, we have a District Reorganization Committee meeting on a regular basis to provide feedback and share questions related to the following areas: Curriculum, STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), Transportation, Technology, Student Support Services, After School Activities, Scheduling, Public Relations & Marketing. Over 50 community members are helping TPS staff create plans that will assist in a smooth transition.

A group of students and staff visited Steelcase earlier this month to look at possible furniture solutions to our learning spaces. Check out one of our favorite furniture solutions in the video below!

Please feel free to review the process so far or to leave a comment at the Reorganization Website.

Thank you again for your continued support of TPS.

Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA) is proud to have partnered with Tecumseh Public Schools for the past 21 years. CISTA Site Coordinators and Graduation Coach provide Integrated Student Supports throughout all 6 school buildings and facilitate programming in support of student needs. 99% of Tecumseh Public School children are served by one or more CISTA Programs.

We invite you all to support and attend the 2017 March Mingle Fundraiser to help us help Tecumseh students. The March Mingle theme this year is a Sock Hop and we are thrilled to announce we are moving back to the Tecumseh High School for the event on March 11, 2017.

Please contact Heather Perez at 517-423-7574 to find out more, buy tickets or to help sponsor the event.
